To engage and empower the Haitian diaspora on all issues impacting Haiti and Haitian Americans.
In the wake of the catastrophic earthquake in Haiti on January 12, 2010, a strategic partnership developed between leaders of South Florida’s Haitian community, prominent business people, elected officials, labor and relief organizations with the shared vision of combining forces to provide immediate relief to our suffering neighbors, capacity building for the rapidly growing South Florida Haitian Community, and laying the groundwork for ongoing collaboration in the reconstruction of a sustainable Haiti. Thus Konbit was birthed.
Konbit is a Kreyol word for gathering, collaborating and cooperating for the greater good – this concept is at the heart of our mission. We are a 501(c)(3) which launched its community-based hub out of a storefront in Little Haiti and offers considerable capacity to the relief and rebuild efforts. Konbit lends voice to the Haitian Diaspora. We engage volunteers who know the language and culture along with other resources to help in Haiti. Also, we advocate for the policies, investments and aid funding that Haiti desperately needs in order to recover.
Efforts underway include:
- Health care professional mobilization and deployment
- Logistics assistance for Immediate Response efforts
- Meeting space provided to community groups
- Referrals to local service providers
- Volunteer recruitment and coordination
- Adult Creole Computer classes
- Civic engagement and leadership workshops in the community
